Bio

LAURA BRADLEY MYERS

Laura is an honors graduate of the University of Tennessee College of Law, where she graduated in the top quarter of her class. Her first professional legal experience after graduation from law school was at the Tennessee Supreme Court, where she served as a judicial clerk for the Honorable Adolpho A. Birch, Jr., former Chief Justice of the Tennessee Supreme Court.  Laura is a published author whose work has been cited by the Tennessee Supreme Court in a published full-court opinion.  In addition, Laura is an experienced trial lawyer, and has acted as lead counsel in thousands of cases during her twenty-one (21) year career. She has practiced, tried, and won personal injury and workers’ compensation cases in courtrooms across Tennessee.  In addition to her significant courtroom experience, Laura is an experienced and accomplished negotiator. She has obtained significant settlements for her clients via personal negotiation with insurance carriers and opposing counsel, as well as in formal mediations.

BACKGROUND & PROFESSIONAL LEGAL EXPERIENCE

Laura attended high school in near Miami, Florida, where she learned to speak fluent Spanish.  Following her graduation from high school, Laura attended the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida, on a full academic scholarship. She studied business, finance, and marketing, and after college graduation worked in direct sales and marketing for almost five years before returning to school to pursue a law degree. After law school and completion of her judicial clerkship at the Tennessee Supreme Court, Laura spent almost seven (7) years working as an insurance defense lawyer, an experience that provided her with significant insight and expertise in how insurance companies evaluate, devalue, and defend valid personal injury claims.

After the birth of her twin sons in 2005, Laura began working for a local plaintiffs’ attorney.  She found that she derived significantly more personal satisfaction from representing people as opposed to insurance carriers.  Thereafter, Laura and her husband, AV rated attorney Michael A. Myers, founded The Myers Law Firm, PLLC in 2012.  Laura’s practice is 100% devoted to plaintiffs’ representation, with an emphasis on seriously injured plaintiffs, wrongful death claims, and catastrophic injury claims.

Laura has extensive professional expertise and experience in working with injured clients, as well as with families who have lost loved ones and are pursuing wrongful death cases.  In addition, Laura has extensive experience in working with seriously injured children.  As both defense counsel and plaintiffs’ counsel, 100% of Laura’s practice for the twenty-one (21) years of her career has centered on personal injury and wrongful death cases, catastrophic injury cases, car wreck and automobile insurance litigation, underinsured and uninsured motorist litigation, and premises liability cases. She carries a significant background in tort law, automobile and vehicular accident law, and insurance law.    Laura has argued and won multiple cases at every level of the Tennessee court system, including the Tennessee Supreme Court, and has been lead counsel in over seventy (70) jury and bench trials

Laura lives in Fountain City, Knoxville, Tennessee, and has been married since 1999 to Michael A. Myers, her husband and law partner. She and Mike have twin fifteen (15) year old sons, Ian and Jack. On weekends and in the evenings, you can find Laura shuttling kids to and from Marching Band, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Young Life, track, and church.  Laura’s interests include anything her kids are doing, family and missions travel, hiking, and reading. She counts mission, family, and her clients as the most important parts of her life.

LEGAL EDUCATION

Laura received her law degree, with honors, from the University of Tennessee College of Law in 1999. At the College of Law, Laura’s studies concentrated on trial advocacy, and her law degree includes an advocacy concentration. While at the College of Law, Laura earned membership on the Tennessee Law Review, where she authored a publication entitled “Torts-Outrageous Conduct and Negligent Infliction of Emotional Distress-Actual Exposure to HIV Required in Fear-of-AIDS Cases.” Laura received the Judge Harry W. Laughlin Jr. Memorial, Tennessee Law Review, Best Casenote Award for this publication. In 2001, the Tennessee Supreme Court cited Laura’s work on negligent infliction of emotional distress claims in a published full-court opinion. See Estate of Julie Amos et al. v. Vanderbilt University et al., 62 S.W.3d 133 (Tenn. 2001).

LEGAL TEACHING, COMMUNITY SERVICE & PROFESSIONAL AFFILIATIONS

Laura has taught as an adjunct Professor of Law at the University of Tennessee College of Law, where she has since been asked to teach additional trial advocacy courses. Laura has also lectured as a guest lecturer on various topics in trial advocacy classes taught at the University of Tennessee College of Law.  She has spoken on many occasions to law students and the local bar on different topics ranging from pretrial litigation to trial practice to ethics in personal injury advertising.

Laura has served her community through her church and as a proud parent of two very involved competitive band students.  She is a Central High School band booster who is happy to serve hot dogs to raise funds for the band in the concession stand at home football games.  In addition, Laura has served on mission in Nicaragua and Guatemala, she has taught apologetics at her church, and she has served on multiple occasions as a lead teaching student counselor at Camp Ocoee Retreat Center in Ocoee, Tennessee. In addition, Laura has served on various committees as a member of the Knoxville Bar Association, and for five years beginning in 2014, Laura served as Chair of the Knoxville Bar Association’s Lawyer Referral and Information Service (“LRIS”) Committee.  LRIS connects thousands of unrepresented callers who contact the local Knoxville Bar Association with lawyers who help them solve their legal problems.  In addition, The Myers Law Firm is a strong supporter of Legal Aid of East Tennessee.

Laura is a member of the Knoxville Bar Association, the Tennessee Bar Association, the Tennessee Trial Lawyers Association, and the East Tennessee Lawyer’s Association for Women. Laura is a Master of the Bench in the local chapter of Knoxville’s legal honorary society, the Hamilton Burnett Chapter of the American Inns of Court.
